What should the Mountain West do?

Rumor has that Boise State will be officially invited to the Mountain West Conference in the next couple of days, and this couldn’t be better news for non-BCS supporters.

The Mountain West has decided to make itself a better conference, and in the process should be the first conference to add a university in years.

Boise State brings everything the Mountain West needs.

More after the Jump.

An already proven name on the college football landscape, Boise State provides: fans, tradition, location, and competitive football.

By adding Boise State to one of the most competitive “non big-six” conferences in college football, the Mountain West all of the sudden could look like a BCS conference. However, some changes will be needed to make the jump.

1st- The Mountain West needs to keep adding teams to create a playoff system. Some logical options here would be creating two six-team divisions and forming a playoff at the end of the season. Some other programs to consider in expansion could include, Fresno State, Nevada, Tulsa, SMU or North Texas. So in my mock Mountain West expansion the conference adds, Boise State, Fresno State and Tulsa to get to 12 programs.

2nd- The next logical step is forming the two different divisions. This could be one of the most difficult decisions for the conference, because they would like to keep the divisions equal and on the same level. In this situation I have created an East and West division. The East includes: 1. Texas Christian, 2. Tulsa, 3. Air Force, 4. Colorado State, 5. Wyoming, 6. New Mexico. The West would include: 1. Boise State, 2. Utah, 3. Brigham Young, 4. Fresno State, 5. San Diego State, 6. UNLV.

3rd- With the two divisions in place the next step would be creating a playoff location. One obvious location pops out right away, Las Vegas to host the championship game. Las Vegas could provide lots of things for a conference championship game in December, good weather and the opportunity for gamblers to see a big game live. How many people would love to go to Vegas the first weekend in December, attend a conference championship game Thursday or Friday night, and then bet on the SEC, ACC and Big 12 championships on Saturday?

Taking all of this in, the Mountain West could very easily make a bid for BCS status, through the use of expansion and realignment.

Extending an invitation to Boise State is the first step.

We already know that the Mountain West is trying to expand; the question is, how much?
