How good is FIU's Garret Wittles?

A couple of weekends ago, I covered the Florida Atlantic-Florida International baseball series, and I saw history in the making.

FIU’s Garrett Wittels extended his hit streak to 48-games with a hit, good enough to move him to second on the all time list of college baseball hit streaks.

Wittles has had a hit in every game this season he has played in, and for one thing, there not little bloopers.

More after the jump.

All weekend Wittles drove balls deep to the outfield gaps over outfielder’s heads often resulting in stand up doubles. Something rare to the college game. Wittles sports a .412 batting average and has manages 23 extra base hits this season.

During last weekend’s Sun Belt conference tournament, Wittles carried his team to the championship, and in the process extended his hit streak to 54-games, four hits shy of the record.

The catch with Wittles however is the fact that he is only a sophomore. Meaning Wittles can’t enter this season’s MLB draft. Sorry, MLB fans, you will have to wait a year.

The good thing for Wittles however, is that by winning the conference tournament he now has a chance to break Robin Ventura’s 187 58-game hit streak.

To do this however, FIU would almost have to win the regional, and they very well could as they have won nine of their past twelve games.

You have to root for the kid, who this time last season was batting .246 and sitting at home.

This weekend he could make history in the Coral Gables regional, and even though he goes to my rival college, I will root for it.

-Former Alabama QB Star Jackson has in fact transferred to Georgia State, which means November 15th when the first year college program travels to Tuscaloosa, the Tide’s former third string quarterback will be lining up against them. I guess, Jackson said; Hey if I’m going to have to play scout team QB all season against Bama’s top defense, why not do it when it counts?

-Rumor has it that Boise State will be formerly invited to the Mountain West Conference by next Monday. I’ve been saying it all along, this is the right move! Boise State, Utah, BYU and TCU need to form the likes of a greater mid-major conference out west. Now all they need to do, is boot some schools and add the likes of Fresno State and Tulsa, and the Mountain West can all of the sudden look like a BCS conference.

-This weekend I’m set to be covering the Gainesville regional for the college baseball tournament, and you can see my “Regional Primer” Here.
