The Best College Football Weekend?

September 11th will always be a day that we will never forget. However this year it could be really special if you’re a college football fan.

The second Saturday in the college football season is stuffed full of premier games. In-conference and out-of-conference matchups take place all day long, meaning fans will be able to watch great college football from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. at night.

Below I have broken down what could be the best weekend of the season.

More after the jump..

Ohio State hosts Miami during the weekend.

To prime the whole weekend, Thursday night starts off with the first SEC game of the season.

Auburn at Mississippi State 7:30 ESPN- Remember the last time Auburn visited Starkville? It was a 3-2  thriller. This year it could be just as defensive. Auburn and Mississippi State both have unproven quarterbacks, but great defenses. Sounds like SEC football to me.

Friday night you can catch a break, unless you want to witness a dying rivalry in West Virginia at Marshall (7 p.m. ESPN). That’s then followed up by UTEP at Houston (10 p.m. ESPN).

And then the real action starts…

FAU vs. Michigan State (in Detroit) Noon ESPNU- Homer pick here. FAU wanted to open there new stadium with Michigan State at home, but that fell apart. Michigan State is playing a virtual home game here.

Georgia at South Carolina Noon ESPN- This could look like a Tampa high school football game to some. South Carolina quarterback Stephen Garcia, and projected Bulldog starter Aaron Murray both played high school football in Tampa. Murray should be happy his first SEC road start is at noon, not at night.

Georgia Tech at Kansas Noon FSN- Kansas breaks in the Turner Gill era against a talented but rebuilding Georgia Tech. The Jayhawks will have had all spring and summer to prepare for the productive triple option offense.

Michigan at Notre Dame 3:30 NBC- Brian Kelly gets a shot at a dying Michigan program, early in the season. The winner of this game should be in shape for a good season.

Iowa State at Iowa 3:30 ESPN2- This game is my “sleeper” pick to be a great matchup. Iowa is coming off its Big 10 championship and BCS bowl run, while Iowa State went to its first bowl game in five years.

Colorado at California 3:30 FSN- Welcome to the Pac-10 Colorado, get use to these trips out west and playing against the Golden Bears. Can Colorado grab its first unofficial Pac-10 conference victory?

Florida State at Oklahoma 3:30 ABC- FSU goes on the road to take on a revamped Oklahoma squad. Can Christian Ponder start his Heisman Campaign with a big road win?

Miami (FL) at Ohio State 3:40 ESPN- The last time these two programs played, it was quit the controversy. Now Miami makes the trip to the horseshoe to take on Heisman hopeful Terrell Pryor. Can Randy Shannon save his job?

Penn State at Alabama 7 ESPN- Another big time game on ESPN. Can Joe Paterno take down the defending National Champions? He will have to stop Heisman winner Mark Ingram first.

Oregon at Tennessee 7 ESPN 2- This game could have been a lot bigger. Lane Kiffin taking on defending Pac-10 champion Oregon, led by starting quarterback Jeremiah Masoli, but things have changed. Derrick Dooley now has the chance to start his era off with a key win.

Ole Miss at Tulane 9 ESPN2- The Rebels have chosen to start the season off where many teams would like to end the season in New Orleans. Can Ole Miss rebound after losing Dexter McCluster?

If you look at all of these games, it almost looks like a bowl season. It appears that the NCAA’s decision to allow an extra game has really worked and created intriguing out of conference matchups.

What to Watch Tonite: (10-3 Overall)

7 p.m.
Phillies at Yankees ESPN- The Bankees won last night and are now tied for first place in the American League East. The Phillies are in a slump, only 4-6 in the last 10 games. A. Ivins likes Yankees 7 Phillies 2

10 p.m.
“June 17th, 1994” ESPN 30 for 30 ESPN- I was only three at the time, but apparently June 17th was one of the greatest days in sports history.

7 a.m. (Because I’m not up that early)
Argentina vs. South Korea FIFA World Cup- South Korea or Argentina can advance to the second round with a win. A. Ivins Likes South Korea 2 Argentina 1
